What to do

Within about 9 miles

About 7 miles south of La Tremblade, on the south-western coast of the peninsula, set in the forest is La Palmyre Zoo, one of France’s most popular.  The zoo is open throughout the year.

9 miles south east of La Tremblade off the D14 and also a stop on the tourist train is Mornac-sur-Seudre.  This pretty old fishing port is well worth a visit and qualifies as one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France.

Just across the river from La Tremblade is Marennes, another town which relies on oyster culture, which is celebrated in the newly developed Oyster City.

Close to Marennes is the Château de la Gataudière, 18th century home of the man who introduced rubber to France and now home to an adventure trail high up in the trees.

The port town of Brouage was fortified between 1630 and 1640 by Cardinal Richelieu as a Catholic bastion against the protestant La Rochelle and you can still walk around the walls.

Now linked by bridge to the mainland, the Island of Oléron is metropolitan France’s second largest island after Corsica.  The island is relatively flat and ideal for walkers and cyclists and has many superb beaches.  At Saint-Trojan-les-Bains a tourist train runs between April and September along the coast opposite Ronce-les-Bains.

The nature reserve at the Port des Salines includes a small harbour with boats, oyster huts and a salt marsh.  A small museum has exhibitions about salt and local customs and one of the huts has been converted into a gastronomic restaurant.
