What to do

Within about 27 miles

Less than an hour’s drive away from La Tremblade is the ancient city of Saintes, an important settlement since before Roman times. See the Roman arch and amphitheatre, wander through the medieval streets or take a cruise on the River Charente.

Not far past Saintes is the fascinating Paleosite, situated in an old quarry where Paleolthic remains were found in 1979.  Lots of multilingual interactive exhibits allow you to explore prehistory as you’ve never seen it before. A restaurant and picnic area and outdoor activities make this an ideal family day out.

About an hour north of La Tremblade is

La Rochelle, the capital of the Charente Maritime department.  A historic port which is still important for both commercial and recreational traffic La Rochelle has something for everybody in its pedestrianised centre.

Within easy reach of the Old Harbour are the Aquarium, the Maritime Museum, the Museum of Automata and the Museum of Scale Models.

To the west of La Rochelle, across a two mile toll bridge, is the pretty Island of Ré.  It is said that the island was discovered by wealthy Parisians when the Riviera became too “common” and there is currently a controversy about whether a reduction in the toll would also reduce to island’s exclusivity.
