What to do

Stay local - La Tremblade and Ronce les Bains

The commune of La Tremblade and Ronce-les-Bains, with about 4,500 inhabitants is situated on the end of the Arvert Peninsula which stretches north-west from Royan, between the River Seudre and the mouth of the Gironde.

La Tremblade is slightly inland but has an interesting port area (La Grève) and a large area given over to the town’s main activity, oyster culture. The area has several restaurants and producers where you can taste the freshest oysters. In this part of town there is also the Maritime Museum showing the history of local oyster culture and fishing.

During the summer an old steam locomotive pulls a train along the Seudre valley to and from Saujon.

Click here to visit the railway’s website.

Click here to go to the local Tourist Office website (French only) and here to view a street map of the two towns.

Ronce-les-Bains grew in the late nineteenth century as a fashionable seaside resort and the commune has about 15 miles of sandy beaches catering for all kinds of activity including surfing, wind-surfing, kite-surfing, sand-karting and sailing.  The beaches closest to the town are very safe and family-friendly. Click here for more information about the beaches.  At the southern end of the beaches is the imposing Coubre Lighthouse, open to the public in the season.

Ronce has a daily market and a range of shops and places to eat and drink.  While here, don’t miss the opportunity for a relaxing drink at the Bar Bordeaux, just opposite the Tourist Office.  Drinks on offer include the tasty, locally brewed Naufrageurs beer and a whisky matured in casks previously used for the local speciality Pineau des Charentes.  There is also a Casino next to the market in Ronce.

During the summer a popular “road-train” runs regularly between La Tremblade and Ronce, free of charge in the morning, with a stop very close to our house.

The commune also includes about 6,000 hectares of pine forest criss-crossed by miles of footpaths and cycle tracks
